That Isn't Just a Serial Number? Part 3

That big, long number on the side of a tire probably looks meaningless, but each number is very specific. If the number in question were “P215/65R 15 95H,” for example, here is what the last section signifies: · 95 – load index, or the weight that each tire is designed to support. To find out what the number means, it must be looked up in the Load-Carrying Capacity per Tire chart. In this example, “95” means that the car can carry a maximum weight of 1,521 pounds. · H – speed rating, or the measurement of the speed at which the tire is designed to run for extended periods. An “H” rating means that the tire can handle up to 130 mph for extended periods. The significance of each letter can be found in a speed rating chart.
